Hi everyone, I'm a newby, so accept my apologies if I'm going over old ground......

I work for my in-laws who are applying for an L1. I think the business is adequate for it's requirements. (5staff & reasonable turnover)
My husband & I have always wanted to try living in the USA, as the kids have grown up, now is as good a time as any.

My Question...........,

after the in-laws get their visa, can the company apply for another for me to go over too, and could my husband & I have our own company????

In anticipation...I thank you all for your knowledge :)

You could get your own L1 for your own business providing it qualifies by having been established for at least 1 year in teh past 3 and that you have enough employees to make it work.

thanks Carl, I don't have my own business. I work for their business. It would take too much time & effort, what with the current climate....

If you are a manager in the business in the UK and they have some employees in teh U.S. then you could maybe come in as a manager on a L1, a bit harder but very often doable.

Then u could come over as the manager to run the US side as long as they have some employees and substance

As I said, you could come as a manager.

many thanks for your comments,

when you say substance & employees, is there a prerequisite???

As we would, in theory, be attached to the UK/US company, would "our" business have any relevance to obtaining L1 ext & green card.

thanks again

You would have to work for the company you are working for now, just be transfered to teh United States Branch. YOu would be able to look at apllying for a green card after you have been trading for 1 year and if you have the other ingredients needed for that, you would probably only get a 1 year L1 if it is a business that has benn trading for less than 1 year in the united states, so you would also need to apply for an extension before your 1st year has expired. If the business has been trading for more than 1 year when you apply, then you can get a 3 year L1, L1 visas in this acatagory can be extended up to a maximum of 7 years including teh original visa.
