Hello Everyone

As posted in my introduce yourself note my sister-in-law who became a US citizen in Feb 08 has sponsored my wife (her sister) for a green card. I have looked on many websites and come across many different answers to my questions. I am hoping I can find someone on this forum who has been or known someone who has been through this process to find out more on how it works. I know the waiting is approximately 10 years but how is that broken down into stages?

Some of the questions are –
How long does it take for the visa petition to be approved?
How do we know when the visa petition has been approved?
How long is the wait for a visa number?
What happens once we get a visa number?

Thanks
Darren

Hi Darren,

No one can tell you how long this process will take as there are so many backlogs and will also depend on which service centre handles your case. Also the wait for a visa number will depend on your country of birth

If you have a case number you can check you case status on line at www.uscis.gov or book an info pass to speak with an immigration officer

Where can I find out the information on these immigration changes that you have mentioned above?

I spoke with a visa specialist some time ago and he did say that changes could be made in the future and to get our application in a soon as we could.

I was speaking with my sister in law the other day about the family sponsorship and she was saying that her Brazilian neighbour sponsored her sister to come over and it only took 4 years. How come it takes over 10 years if you are from the UK?
