Country: UK Petition Re: Government Proposal for Road Pricing in UK

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyone received this today and voted??? I just heard on the radio that it's been very successful so far! .....

Please Sign and pass it on ... it only takes a minute!

The government's proposal to introduce road pricing will mean you having topurchase a tracking device for your car and paying a monthly bill to use it.

The tracking device will cost about £200 and in a recent study by the BBC,the lowest monthly bill was £28 for a rural florist and £194 for a deliverydriver.

A non working Mum who used the car to take the kids to school paid £86 inone month.

On top of this massive increase in tax, you will be tracked. Somebody willknow where you are at all times.

They will also know how fast you have beengoing, so even if you accidentally creep over a speed limit you can expect aNIP with your monthly bill.

If you care about our freedoms and stopping the constant bashing of the cardriver, please sign the petition on No 10's new website.

Please pass this on to anyone who owns a car/motorcycle because it affects them too!

Is this not instead of road tax? It may be a fairer system. Why do little old ladies who only use their cars once or twice a month to go to Bingo or shopping have to pay the same road tax as a sales rep covering 40,000 a year. If it stops the rows of "chelsea tractors" outside London schools (with their non working mums) and gets the kids walking or cycling it may not be a bad thing. The congestion charge in London works on a similar principle and seems to have had some positive impact on congestion reduction.

I've just read a little more about this....its as likely to get off the ground as the UK's proposed D cards and return to Poll Tax! Anyway why the heck should we care what happens to drivers in the UK - we live in the land of cheap oil and the car is king!

Hey InnVic where you been in Cambridge. The term Road Tax disappeared from the vocabulary a long while ago and was replaced with Vehicle Excise Licence. When it was the road tax it was just that, but like anything that governments do, it ends up going in the pot and gets spent on something else. I really do believe you will get road pricing, especially as the technology now exists to do it (it didn't before).
Personally, I've alwasy believed that the fairest of all was do away with the tax disc bit and stick the tax on the petrol. The more miles and petrol you do, the more you pay. That seems eminently fair to me, unless you happen to be a little old lady who works as a sales rep!!!:) .
As an aside, there was an article in yesterdays BBC online about the chief analyst at Daimler Chrysler. He was poo poohing some report on pollution/green house gases produced by some group for Gordon Brown. It just so happened this economist guy was spouting to parts manaufacturers at the Detroit Auto Show and calling it crazy talk. He went on to say that he saw oil prices & gas prices falling and americans returning to buy big suv's again. He conveniently forgot to mention that one of the reasons he wants that to happen is because Chrysler US is in deep doodoo because they have an over reliance on big trucks/suv's and no bugger is buying them! Chrylser do not have a small car in their range and like Fords and GM seem capable of only bringing to the market bigger SUV's, more SUV's and bigger cars or ones that run on Duracell batteries that are even more worse for the environment. Not surprsing the Big 3 are all at sea and Toyota are cleaning up. Dinosaurs breed dinosaurs.

Spoken like a true Brit in America. 'I'm untouchable -- I'm in the Promised Land now'. Good for you that you made it over here. How about some respect for the environment,

thats not a very friendly attitude mbdriver - and its foolish to make assumptions - I actually use substantially less oil/gas/petrol here than I did in the UK - my post was an attempt at humour - I believe they still have that in the UK?

I still do about 4 miles a week here...the same as in the UK...

I must admit that I have covered more miles in the four years I've been here than I did in 20 in the UK!:( I think the same could be said for anyone in the property management and related industries - you just cover the same stretch of road over and over again day in day out. Plus you need a car to do anything over here so the same type of thing just would not be feasible.

Lets think of our buds in the uk! and as we all know the E2 is temporary if we dont sign it may bite us in the bum when and if we return. (Or our kids when they age out!) (This is ment in a light hearted way and not being critical!) :)

Hi InnVic,
Very diplomatically put...I'm amazed at how may new members on here, so quickly resort to this base level - makes me wonder what their motivation is???. Only one jacka** on this - and I don't think it's you. ;)

I used to do well over 50k miles per year in the UK, and I still do approx 10k miles in the UK each year and probably about 15k here...so I'll be stung both ways, and don't really care...does that make me a dual-continent jacka**???? :D

mbdriver
06-07-2007, 07:01 PM
Oh, and so because someone is new to this forum, their motivation is in question? Well tell me then, what would my 'hidden agenda' be?

What could be my agenda, besides - as my post implied - giving the guy an honest opinion on his non-eco friendly 'I'm above the rest because I'm in America' attitude?

What is with the 'dual-continent' comment? InnVic was trying to raise himself (and others in America) above the people of the UK (before he specified it was meant as humor, which is fine). I gave him my opinion on that, end of story.

So McSporran, based on InnVic's first comment and my response to that -- how exactly am I a jacka**???

Truth is, in this context I don't care how many miles you drive here, or how many you drove before in your home country. Anyone making rude and derogatory comments should expect a response like mine. InnVic later told us his comments were meant in a humorous way. That is great, only his original post didn't leave that impression.

As put many times before.

Written word comes with no expression or feelings, and can be mistaken for rude or arrogant, when humor was ment. I know I have fallen into this cat, at times. Having posted with innvic many times, they are not rude intentionally. Unless you really p*** 'em off!!! Hehehehehehehehehe xxxxxxxxxxx

Well put byjove...but my comments were only meant to be humorous to InnVic, the post wasn't addressed to mbdriver, and if he chooses to find offense in it...then so be it.

mbdriver - if in giving your comments you have to call people offensive names - then don't bother commenting. If you don't have the language skills to debate in an adult way - then I'd rather you didn't comment at all. My comment about new users...was (and if you bother to read other threads) something which I have raised before - InnVic and many others have been posting on here for a long time - so I always wonder why someone new here, gets so offensive with "complete strangers".

I won't comment further as I'd rather spend my time, dealing with real issues, than playground trivia. - "end of story!"

Agree with above comments. There is never any excuse for petty name calling. If you disagree with the content or tone of a post, a counter argument will be considered with more respect than petty name calliing.

You chose to call me a jacka** for no good reason -- how can you expect anyone to think that was addressed to InnVic???

mbdriver - if in giving your comments you have to call people offensive names - then don't bother commenting.
When used in the right context, what I wrote can be constructive. Guess what big cat, I am not going anywhere.

If you don't have the language skills to debate in an adult way - then I'd rather you didn't comment at all.
Now that's real mature debating right there. I think you know this isn't about language skills.

I do bother reading other threads. But guess what, I haven't read them all as I am -- tadaa, new to this forum. Too bad you aren't enough of a celebrity that I bother reading up on your background.

I won't comment further as I'd rather spend my time, dealing with real issues, than playground trivia. - "end of story!"
Who gave you the impression this is all about getting the last word. Come on, behave like a grown up.

McSporran, I believe you could turn out to be a nice person. Just be nice to newcomers, ok? Even the ones with an opinion on people posting rude comments. As well as the ones that aren't used to InnVic's humor (yet). :D

Anyhow, seeing as everyone in the UK appears to be tree hugging these days and being eco friendly, etc. How much carbon emissions did Tony boy's farewell world concert give to the rest of the world? At least Queenie paid up for giving us gas. But then again, isn't that the way of the rich. They pollute, pay the fine and that somehow makes it all OK?
Just to put the record straight, not every person in the USA drives a huge, gas guzzling dinosaur and whilst we're at it just also remember that our mpg figures may not look to bright here, but we are talking US gallon which is smaller than an imperial gallon. When you can put the whole of the UK in one small part of Texas, you have to realise just how vast this country is and it's impractical to have a bus stop at every street corner, otherwise we'd have millions of buses here and the UK would be moaning about a bus shortage.
Out of curiousity, does mbdriver stand for mercedes benz driver? If so, then I'd be keeping my head below the parapets if it were me, when taking pot shots at others. On the otherhand it could be Midlands Bus Driver or mybike !;) ;) ;).
Don't regard every thread on here as being of world shattering importance and if someone throws some humor in, then accept it as a sign that we all haven't become boring farts.

Peter, i think that there are certain people that just make it their lives to stir up trouble! plain and simple as that!
look at Traveller for example, all she did was join the forum, create some really bad negative posts/threads/thoughts etc and gone!
we all know INNVIC was joking, but newer members dont! so therefore, if you dont understand someones sense of humor keep quiet, please for the sake of peace.

If I wanted to cause trouble I wouldn't be here in the forums, I would be out causing trouble. I don't know who Traveller is/was, but I would like to think I post somewhat productive posts. At least I stand up for what I believe is right.

I now know InnVic was joking. I didn't at the time, as nothing in his post indicated it. Please re-read his post that prompted my response. It wasn't that I didn't get his humor.

Anyway, I'm glad I joined the forum, this seems to be a lively place. :)

I would be happy to introduce myself -- in an attempt to keep this thread at least a little on topic, I will post it in the Introduction forum in the near future.

 That is priceless! Guilty on first charge, but with a very decent 27/city and 37/hwy, an MB E320 CDI is by no means among the worst polluters in the country.
