As far as I can see from what you have posted, the rules are that you will only be able to work for the company you obtained the L1 visa for. Otherwise, you will not be fulfilling the objective of your initial application which I presume doesn't mention any other business or intention to puruse other interests.
My advice would be to bite the bullet, arrive on your L1. Work the business for one year. Renew the visa (proving that you have fulffilled the requirements of the visa), then apply to adjust status to permanent resident. Once you have the green card in hand you have authority to work anywhere or for whoever you desire.
Anyone else see anything different here?
