Hmmm. I thought that I should really drop by and at least put a post in the African Residents forum, which is looking a little bare, to say the least.

Not sure how much I should divulge about myself, as you people seem to be very suspicious of new members (http://forum.expatsvoice.org/showthread.php?t=1188). It's a bit odd, since I studied for three years in Newcastle and found them to be the most friendly people. Still, I guess that's what living in america does to you?

Anyway, I don't expect much response, since I'm over here and you all seem to be over there, but at least I've put Africa on the map, so to speak.

Thanks for listening.

Hi 6000,

I am new myself and based in England and am new to this forum. I have to say I am surprised you have that impression that some of the members seem suspicious of the new members. I have been made to feel very welcome and my issues have got some invaluable advice and insight from it.

Sometimes there are interesting and conflicting views expressed and people can get very passionate, but I think that's a good thing.

I'm sure others will warmly welcome you to the forum.

Welcome to the forum 6000! :)

There is nothing suspicious about anyone who shares their stories online with a bunch of strangers, and that's what 98% of the members on here have done, ....to the betterment of everyone who follows.

The forum is very friendly and everyone is entitled to their opinion without getting too upset about it.

Nice to see you putting Africa on the map. Perhaps you can join in on the less serious postings on lifestyles etc. ??

Welcome, anyway!

Bobby

Hi 6000 :welcome:

I have never had the pleasure of a visit to South Africa but Zoe went in her early 20's and loved it.

My brother visits regularly on business and also loves it ( but not the long plane ride ). He sent us some spectacular pictures when he drove along the coast on his last visit.

Please divulge some more about yourself as we seem to be a mostly US site and some ExPat experiences from elsewhere would probably come as a breath of fresh air. Where do you live, what do you do, ease or difficulties in moving there etc?

We are, by and large a friendly lot, but some of the troubles in living in the US can seem like we're bitching and moaning and getting at each other but that is the great thing about forums like this.... you can let off a bit of steam and nobody takes it too seriously. A newbie might view it differently, but come back regularly and you'll see what I mean.

hi 6000 - a true "geordie" girl here,. Born and bread in Newcastle and left in mid 90's Now in snowy Vermont. In my "past life" we had taken vacations in Africa (Mombassa and Kenyan coast) and found the people there to be as lovely as I'm sure you found the people in Newcastle. We're not a suspicious group at all - except perhaps if we think someone is acting suspicous and asking too much of us (I think you probably mean me - I made a a mistake with the journalist thing!) ...anyway..welcome :-)

Hi 6000,

Welcome to the site. We really are a friendly bunch and I'm sorry that you feel that we are suspicious of newcomers - that really is not our intent.

We can get a little heated with each other sometimes, but we always kiss and make up!!!

Hope to hear more from you in the future.

Oh OK. I'll believe you. ;) I actually came across this site through Lana, so it was a bit of a shock to see the reactions on here at first.

Anyway.

Not sure what interesting stuff I can tell you about life here. It is interesting to me though. Every day a new adventure. I write it all up (http://www.ballacorkish.net/6000), although sometimes it's less personal and more general.
Been here 3 years now, bought a house, got married, had a child. And I get to see sights that people travel the world to see, every day on my drive to and from work.
Can't be all bad, hey?

feel like home to meet African brother in a forum like this.
Im a newbie as well but my threads was responded to very well...
though i still feel a bit out of place for lack of something to contribute yet.
Im in Portsmouth, just finish my MSc and finding it difficult to secure a job in my field...they seem to be looking for UK job experience and I havent got any as I am originally from Nigeria.
I have been 3years as well, and it is not bad at all...only for the job issue.
I intend to try out H1B for USA but still the stories so far are not encouraging.
Really glad to see u put Africa on the map

Hi

Can I ask what subject you are studying? Never know you might even get a job offer from a member.

Hi 6000. Where in SA do you live? My parents were British, but I was born in SA and lived there until 6 years ago. We had a sugar farm in KwaZulu Natal and I still get very homesick.

A second for Africa. I have lived here for 32 years in a town just east of Johannesburg. I went through the whole trauma. To get it out of my system I wrote and published a book about it all. I love this country. I am 60 years old and am now retired. I bought a DVD rental store and am keeping myself busy with that. I have one daughter who will shortly provide me with my first grand daughter. I am married to Sally who is an artist and writer. The weather upon the Reef is from Paradise. The crime is from Hell.Paul Elliott from Darkest Africa.
