Hi all,
just found this site find how much your web site is worth,do not blame me if it not very much lol
http://www.dnscoop.com/
Hi Susie, I registered a domain name for our company yesterday. Obviously it is not worth much..... However I clicked on a link that said whois XXXXXXXXX.
From there I get the name of who owns the website and the phone number that was used when registering the site.
This disturbs me .... I can't explain why but I know it does.
Partly because the lack of data protection in the US gives me an uncomfortable feeling.

I use a host who provides a level of privacy. I'm sure other providers also offer this service.

Whois is nothing new... Its was implemented for the start of the Internet. Furthermore its actually an offence not to provide accurate, genuine Whois information to your registrar.
However, most registrars (I use GoDaddy) provide Whois-by-Proxy which hides personal info. Sometimes they charge for this though, but not usually much.

I could be wrong, but it might also be possible that the website allows others viewers to choose to have their personal information publicised, simply so they can be contacted by a third party who might be interested in buying the domain name from the owner.

Even many of the BIG web companies can have personal info accessed by whois - you want to get a CEO's name - and sometimes e-mail try it - or I prefer www.betterwhois.com there you can check allsorts of cool stuff like websites before changes (useful if someone changes something that you need to rely on later - it shows date of change etc..)...oh and my website was worth $829 - but its priceless to me :-)

Oh wow! I just checked my domain name. My name, address, phone number and email are all published when I did the check on www.betterwhois.com. Mine is also worth $800.
and how do you feel now ?

Don't know to be honest. Of course I'd prefer it not to be there but as long as no whacko seeks me out I'm happy with that. At the moment it's just a domain name, but once I develop it into a functional website, that will probably change how I feel about it.

Hi Sab,
When you went through the process at the domain registrars there was an option to add privacy - I think it is $8.95 extra. This would give you the privacy I think you are seeking.
You can still add it now - I think. Log into the control panel at your domain registrars. Then look for a mention of privacy somewhere.
I have privacy on only one of my domains but the rest of the domains will show me as the owner and purchaser. I can't remember the reason I had for adding privacy on that one domain :)
Even though this openness of information in the US may concern you there is the flip side to consider. I don't know about anyone else, but to me if I cannot see who owns a business or domain name it makes me suspicious as to whether that business is legitimate and what has the owner to hide. If I am looking online to buy something and the site has no contact name only a feedback form then I walk away (browse another website).
Peoples' business information is already freely available online - Florida has www.sunbiz.org where you can look up people, business names and ficticious names. The property appraiser websites can give you the purchase/sales information about a property. Just the other day I was reading mortgage documents online over at Orange County.
If you have any questions about adding the privacy Sab just give me a call or email as this is what I do for a living :)
