It will have been 10 years next February since I wore my K2s. K2s are my trusted boots & skiing gear which have been to the French Alps, the Austrian tyrol and the Canadian Rockies. Appart from Lake Tahoe, I am stuck on places to ski in the US, this is not too say that I don't know of any other places to ski, but I am looking for a recommendation. I need somewhere that can cater for an 8yr old beginner, a wife who likes to ski for the first 30 mins of every day and then spend the rest of the day shopping and me, a cross between Eddie the Eagle & Franz Klammer wearing an Elma thud hat.

Any suggestions please?

Your K2's ....are those Salomons?? I seem to remember back in the mid 80's having a pair of skis that were Salomon K2's

Anyway, for your trip, it has to be Colorado!

Breckenridge is great. You can book ski on, ski off chalets (3 story homes with hot tub etc.) relatively cheaply. Nothing better than skiing right back to your accommodation and not having to take lifts, buses or shuttles.

It's quite a small quaint town. Small enough that the accommodations are so close to town that everything is very convenient. There's a great Italian restaurant (it's the only one there), that we had a beautiful meal during a huge snow storm. Perhaps it was the warm atmosphere? Who knows, but reasonably priced and great service.

Breckenridge itself is very family oriented, and you wont find the usual bunch of drunk college crowds, apart from Spring break of course.

Depending on where you're travelling from, but Salt Lake, Utah is also very good. Very commercial and you'll pay for it too, but great facilities.

We're out of season now, but you've really put me in the mood!!!

Not done Colorado but we did Killington Vermont once and that is nice. I would still pick Tahoe though., why not Tahoe, I love the place, it has everything.

Tahoe - I liked the skiing there, but her indoors found the snow a little slushy, but then again it was 70 degrees and a little too warm for regular skiing attire. I like the idea of Breckenridge, but whilst not being a rowdy person myself, I do like a bit of 'energy' around the place. I guess it will be a toss up between Tahoe, Banff (Sunshine & Lake Louise) & Breckenridge.

Julie,
We have also done LL and Sunshine in January and it froze my b@##$%^& off!! We did the moonlight dog run. It was meant to be romantic, but we nearly froze as the temperatures dropped to something around 20 below. I agree, the skiing at Lake Louise was great, the only problem is that Louise had morning sickness every day.......We stayed at the Rocky Mountain Resort in Banff. Where did you stay?

We stayed in Canmore, it is just outside Banff. I think it was called Chateau Canmore as a rip off of Chateau Lake Louise. If you go there again, do the ice canyon walk and the snowmobiling trip which is just outside of the National Park on the way from Lake Louise to Vancouver. We enjoyed those more than the skiing as it was perishing when you got high up.

Hi

Just wondering how many Brits have not visited Scotland, Ireland, Cornwall or other beautiful places in the UK.

I have never been to Scotland or Ireland, but I have been to Cornwall and so quaint, blue sea, sandy beaches and the Yum Cornish Pasties

Hey Emma, my home town was Hull and a trip to Scarborough was luxury :p But good to hear someone mention those places!

My childhood holiday destination was Great Yarmouth every year without fail!! Staying in a B&B with shared bathrooms! It always rained too, can never remember a visit when it was sunny. Good English breakfast though ;)

We just went up to the Appalachian mountains in North Carolina, over the border to Tennessee, and then through S Carolina to Charleston, beautiful city. Mountainous so different to Florida, great scenery and interesting places to visit mainly to do with the Civil War and the slave plantation past. We drove up, takes about 9 hours to N Carolina, 6 plus back from Charleston.
David there is a place to ski in North Carolina but only about 12 runs, four lifts, looked about as big as say Borovets.

Some of you will already be familiar with the Ginn Corporation. Reunion, Bella Collina etc. - all high end communities.

Well, the next station for the Ginn bandwagon to roll into, is Laurelmor in Western North Carolina. Near Boone and Blowing Rock.

I must say that I am very impressed with the concept of mountain resort living and think that the masterplan and pricing is a wonderful investment for anyone interested in grass roots investment for the future.

Besides this, once you see the club house for the most expensive golf course in the US, sat high in the mountains, I guarantee you'll be sending the conceptual pictures to all of your friends. It's like a castle.

Lots are being released soon, to the public, after the initial release to existing Ginn buyers, who had priority. I think they've sold 80 already and have a further 260 available. The majority of the lots have mountainous views and are approx 1 - 5 acres. Pricing starts at $500,000. Not based on size, but more on view and accessibility. You can buy a decent 2 acre lot for $500k. Time limit to build is 8 years, and the golf membership is included, which would set you back $50k. The real estate taxes are a blip beside what they are in Central Florida. I just think it's a "no brainer".

I don't work for Ginn or anyone connected to their organisation. I just thought I'd share an idea that my wife and I have for investment, in case someone else was looking for something interesting to do. We were on the subject of the Carolinas and if you haven't looked at the possibilities, perhaps you should.
