Warning: Tax Hike Ahead!
"Do you have an extra $3,000 lying around that you're willing to donate to the federal government? The answer is likely a resounding, "No," which means you had better start saving now. That's because the Democratic Budget Resolution, which the House of Representatives passed this week, includes the biggest tax hike in our nation's history. Should this budget be enacted into law, Wisconsin taxpayers can expect to pay an average of $2,964 more in taxes next year..."

Do you have an extra $3,000 lying around that you’re willing to donate to the federal government? The answer is likely a resounding, “No,” which means you had better start saving now. That’s because the Democratic Budget Resolution, which the House of Representatives passed this week, includes the biggest tax hike in our nation’s history. Should this budget be enacted into law, Wisconsin taxpayers can expect to pay an average of $2,964 more in taxes next year.
Once again, the new majority in the House of Representatives has shown how politics trumps policies when it comes to legislation. Twelve years after losing their majority, the new Democratic leadership has reverted to its old ways by putting together a budget that imposes a $400 billion tax increase - the largest in American history - to cover up its new obligations and new unprecedented spending levels.
The Democrats’ tax hike would affect every working American. Their budget provides no clear fix to the Alternative Minimum Tax. It eliminates marriage penalty relief, slashes the child tax credit in half, and resurrects the Death tax. Moreover, consider the following:
115 million taxpayers would see their taxes increase, on average, by $1,795 in 2011;
48 million married couples would incur average tax increases of $2,899;
Taxes would increase, on average, by $2,181 for 42 million families with children;
12 million single women with children would see their taxes increase, on average, by $1,082;
17 million elderly individuals would incur average tax increases of $2,270;
Taxes would rise, on average, by $3,960 for 26 million small business owners.
For the Party that claims to be pro-middle class, their budget sure sticks it to American families.
As one who serves the 5th District’s families and businesses, I could not, and did not, support a budget that will pile the tax burden on them. Instead, I supported the common-sense alternative offered by fellow Wisconsinite, House Budget Committee Ranking Member Paul Ryan. Congressman Ryan’s budget substitute would have balanced the budget by 2012, ended the raid on Social Security, and provided one year of AMT relief, all without increasing taxes.
When it comes to a budget, whether discussing the finances of a family or of the federal government, the principle remains the same - live within our means. Clearly, there are more challenges when dealing with the federal budget and all its bureaucracies, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try. Although the House shunned its responsibility by passing this budget, I hope the Senate will take a different approach.
