View Full Version : Anyone Hired a Nanny?

Hi All,

I was discussing with a group of friends on whether we would be able to hire a live in nanny to help with our 2 year old.

We talked about whether we should have a trained nanny from here in the US, or whether we'd be better off relocating someone from the UK. There were vastly differing opinions on salary in our discussion as I thought we'd have to pay quite dearly for the privilege. Anyone know where we could start looking?

Anyone have any experience of this?

Thanks,

Bobby

MY kid is a teen so no, but you could hire an au pair from the UK perhaps? I did a search and found www.aupairusa.org I was an au pair once many years ago ( France) and I dont remember being paid very much.

Just read the requirements and the host family need to be US citizens or green card holders. Nio idea if you are a green card holder, Bobby?? If not just one of the other things you cant do here on a visa!!

Yep we'll be fine, with the aupairusa.org.

I'll check it out.

Thank you. I'll let you know on here how we get on.

Cheers,

Bobby

I was reading through the site and everything seemed to fit what we required and looked like a viable proposition for us, and every time it mentioned having an aupair USA consultant in "your area" I wasn't for what minute concerned that there wouldn't be one in the Orlando area.

Guess what??

There isn't one!

...so THAT scuppers that idea!

Who'd have thunk it?

There has to be a consultant within a one hour drive of your zip code and I even tried our old zip at Dr Phillips of 32819 to be closer to Metro Orlando, but still nothing.

Ah well!!

Anyone else got any other ideas. Any UK sites for work abroad like this??

Thanks,

Bobby

It was the first I came to on google, just putting au pair USA in, there must be one with an agent near here, just work through the sites. Are you a green card holder then? I must say I have no idea why you have to be to have an au pair, another thing which dont make no sense.

I presume it's to avoid the uncertainty of placing one of their au pairs with someone who could be "ejected" at any time, leaving the au pair in the lurch. Makes sense.

My step-daughter's American sister's mother is a green card holder, so we would qualify. Work that one out!!

As a central FL nanny they way I find most work is going into yahoo and typing in central florida nannies. the same will work for au pairs and most au pairs have a listing of international au pairs. The advantage (or disadvantage to me) is that european au pairs/nannies will have proper training while here in the US there isn't really any regulation for this type of job. Below is another site with au pair listings in the central florida area, maybe this will be better.

This is stating the obvious, but with some of the stories that have been in the news I'll say it anyway, make sure you get legitimate references going back a few years.

Hi Bobby,

My God Man, what are you thinking. You know you only have to ask Ted and he will change his occupation any day for your darling little girl. I think he has fallen in love with her!!

Thank you Annie,

...and thanks for leaving that birthday present on our doorstep when you went off to the airport. She was so excited and it was a real nice touch.

After exhaustive searches we've kinda given up on the idea. We couldn't find a level of care that suited our lifestyle. It was either au pairs who were almost required to be integrated into your family for a year, or to the other end of the scale, ..someone who'll pick them up after school and watch them for a few hours.
As much as we would have liked to have someone there to help out, having someone "live" with us was just out of the question and wouldn't have been fair on "them" either. We live a very varied life. Nothing is normal or settled.

Bobby

PS. Annie, I did send an E-mail from Charlie's E-mail address on her birthday to Ted's address.
