They have a back log at Washington at the moment and are quoting 6 weeks for passport renewals - and ours took 8 weeks. They also did not take any notice of the date of travel that I had put on the top of the form - luckily I had changed my travel dates by 1 month after I submitted my forms as they didnt make it back in time for the original date

If anyone needs to travel urgently, they can complete an on-line status enquiry at http://ukinusa.fco.gov.uk/en/our-offices-in-the-us/other-locationsin-us/orlando/regional-information/110-passport-status-inquiry
The backlog is reducing, and we'll be back to normal soon.

My husband needs to renew his British Passport. Can a business owner countersign his application?
chris

I am sure Dean may give advice on this, but having renewed some 5 passports over the years here, we use people like our Bank manager, School Principal, Teacher, HOA Manager. These are all people who are 'professional' and have known us personally. If you work on the latter criteria, you shouldn't go far wrong. Just remember one things... who the hell is going to check?

As long as the person has known him for 2 years then there shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for the response! I do all our banking so my husband never sees anyone at our bank - we've only used an attorney a couple of times and she is my sister so we thought she would be considered a relative and so wouldn't be able to countersign his signature. And, my husband has never seen a physician since he moved here, so no doctor knows him!!! I'll ask the owner of my company to do it - he has known my husband for 7 years!

Hi Everyone
I am in the process of renewing my uk passport whilst living in florida. It expires in december 2009. Do I need to send in my birth certificate with the renewal application, or is my current passport sufficient documentation?
chris

Go to the weblink for passports. You can just google UK embassy Washington and go from there. It gives you the forms to download and they in turn tell you what you need to send in with your application. It depends on your personal circumstances.

The information provided here is very useful as are the links. However, when researching I cannot anywhere find the difference in documentation needed for the "simple" renewal of a British Passport rather than an original application request. Even the C1 application form, which seems to be that used for an original application and a renewal, does not discriminate between the 2 circumstances.
I would have thought that less documentation needs to be supplied for a renewal of a current passport? Or am I wrong?
I was born in the UK (I am a male) and my son was born overseas in 1980. But I would not think this affects the more simple renewal of his passport. The C1 form asks for ORIGINAL birth certs for the individual + mine+ my marriage cert etc. etc. This level of documentation seems appropriate for a first passport application rather than a renewal.
Has anyone got any direct info? Thanks
p.s. yes I did go this the following page:
It begins with a heading for "First time applicants" thus the long original documentation list, but nowhere can I see the likely needs for a RENEWAL of a passport.
http://ukinusa.fco.gov.uk/en/passports/passport-documents
My "guess" is that the existing passport should be enclosed + new photos appropriately signed + completed C1 forms properly signed. But I hate to "guess".
My prior posting appears to be lost so I will repost and my apologises if this becomes a duplicate.
I am researching the documentation needs for my son who is about to RENEW his British passport.
As background I am a male, born in the UK and hold a current British passport. My son was born outside of the UK in 1980 and received his first British passport a couple of months later. We both reside in the USA and his exisiting/currrent Brit passport is about to be sent to the UK embassy in Washington for normal renewal.
I have researched all the links provided on this thread including: http://ukinusa.fco.gov.uk/en/passports/passport-documents
I see that a C1 form is used by both "first time applicants" and "renewals". But I only see the documentation needs (long) for "first time applicants. Rather than resubmit originals of his birth cert + my birth cert + my marraige cert etc. etc. every time he renews surely the needs are rather less. i.e his current British passport + appropriate photos + fully signed C1 forms?
What's the right answe,r or where can I read the specifics? As I say the links provided for docs seem merely to list "first time applicants" needs and nowhere can I see the needs for a renwal of a current passport.
Thanks

It takes 10 business days to process the application once it has been received by the UK Passport Service in Washington (that doesn't include postage times back to you). They had some minor delays over the Christmas period so best to allow a few extra days.
Hope this helps.

I also need to renew my British passport whilst residing in the US. Are the renewal fees the same as the fees for obtaining a passport for the first time i.e. over $200? I renewed 5 years ago and they were under $100 back then. Why have the fees greatly increased?
In addition, does the person who countersigns need to be British or will an American who has known me for 2 years suffice?
Thank you.

Byjove has hit the nail on the head. The latest fees are shown here: http://ukinusa.fco.gov.uk/en/passports/passport-fees
The form can be countersigned by American (as long as you have known them for a couple of years, and they aren't related to you).

Today is Jan 5th 2010. I live in California but am still a British subject and hold a British passport. Am going to Australia and New Zealand March 16th2010. My passport expires 6th April, the cruise line just informed me that my passport has to have at least 6 months left on it after the last day of travel, which means I am in trouble. I can get it renewed obviously, but unfortunately I need the passport until Jan 23rd, (going to Belize, in 2 weeks.) So if I get the renewal application Fedexed to the British Embassy in Washington DC, on January 23rd, will it be back in time for me to travel on March 16th (approx 7 weeks?)
I am so nervous this cruise cost us $16,000.
Thanks for any tips.

Dean, love my mug by the way, but to say rates have gone up because of the exchange rate is twaddle.
The rate today is about $1.60 to the £. This makes the UK passport extortionately expensive. When compared to other European countries (A comparison I posted somewhere but can't find) the UK is the most expensive by quite a margin.

You can renew your passport up to nine months before it expires. Any time left on your old passport will be transferred to the new. The current processing time for passports at the UK Passport Service in Washington is 10 days (you need to add a couple of days for security screening the envelope when it arrives plus allow a few more days for postage processing once the passport has been processed. In all, you should have your new passport within 16 working days). You'll need to contact the Austalian and New Zealand Embassies for information about visa requirements.
Hope this helps.

Mike,
You posted the comparison on our Facebook page, but you're not longer a fan (oops:).
The exchange rate is the Consular exchange rate which is an average of the commercial exchange rate over the last 30 days or so. If it fluctuates above or below a certain point then the rate is changed to compensate (otherwise passport prices would change every day).
Hope this helps to explain.

Not that I want to harp on about this. :)
Thanks for pointing me to the comparison:
Passport prices if renewing in the US:
US: $95
France: $126
Canada: $92
Australia: $174
Mexico: $100... See More
Germany: $107
UK $212
This comparison was done in September, since when the £ has fallen on it's arse (Was 1.64, now 1.59 and forecast to drop further). Does this mean the price will be dropping imminently?
There is no justification for the British passport costing almost twice as much as one for Germany or France. (Apart from the obvious. ;))
Dean, you represent British Citizens abroad so can't you write to the government complaining about this on our behalf? It would be so much more helpful than spending time trying to justify the exorbitant cost.
PS. Don't know why I am not a fan anymore. I shall remedy that immediately. (On checking, I am a fan still)

$225.80 billed to the CC on 12/30.
But I'm starting to get nervous. Today is the 13th working day, (adding every bank holiday possible, and maybe a couple of extra days too) due to travel outside the US on Jan 17th.
Will I get an E mail with a UPS tracking number?
How does the return postage work?
$2.50 a minute for the careline http://ukinusa.fco.gov.uk/en/passports/contact-us
Bit steep IMO

Hi Everyone,
I am a British citizen and US resident and am trying to renew my passport. Since my last passport renewal I have gotten married and have a differend last name. Ive been looking for information on whether I need to send in my original marriage certificate and whether or not my American drivers license or green card are needed (or at least copies). Do I need to send in my original birth certificate or is my old passport enough?
Im going on vacation in March and hoping to do this correctly so I get the new passport back in time. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I have a question I'm hoping someone can answer.
I was born in the UK in '78 to American Parents. Lived there for about 13 years before moving to the states. I haven't used my UK passport in 20+ years (and its since been destroyed).
I'm going to be travelling a lot from the US to the UK and from the US to Canada and would like to get my UK passport to make it more convenient.
Would this be possible? I have my UK birth certificate.
Thank you so much.

I am in the process of renewing my daughter's UK passport, she received her first when she was 14 years old - she was born here in the states, but my husband was born in No.Ireland and has his UK passport. I am trying to locate a place to get her passport pictures taken in Seattle WA, but have not had luck with Costco or Kinkos (don't meet the size standards) - any recommendations on where to get the passport photos done? Thanks!
chris
01-28-2010, 06:36 PM
Walgreens or CVS will do them. Although they give the impression that they only do US passport pics, they don't, they do them all. When they've taken the pic and uploaded the card to their machine, their editing software asks which country. When the UK is entered it brings up the size and specs and they simply adjust the image to fit.
Problem is as ever the assistant you're dealing with. Some know what they are doing and are helpful, others are just there for the paycheck and can't be arsed. Just persevere with them.

What is the process of actually turning up in person to the embassy in Washington for a passport renewal.
Is it like the process in the UK.
Wait, pay, wait, named called and then you can walk away the same day with your passport?
Can I do this in person to renew the passports of a my family (wife/son/daughter).
Any idea on how it it takes?

I have applied for my two daughters British passports via the British Washington Consulate (you can no longer apply via the British consulate in Mexico) they received my application on the 19th Jan via UPS and took the fee (via credit card) around 10 days later. Nearly 5 weeks have passed and still no sign of the passports. I would hate to apply when it's a peak travel time seeing that they are so slow off peak.
The British Mexican consulate used to take no longer than 1-4 working days to have a chip passport ready. So why is the British Washington consulate soooooooo........ slow? I can only guess they haven't got enough staff to process all passports applications for all the Americas and Caribbean on a decent time scale.
It's useless calling that over priced number to "Careline Services" as they don't have a clue to the information on every individual application.

In the end, I went in person.
They do renewals in person for extreme emergencies or when they are not overloaded.
With the snowmageddon, they told me they managed to get the wait to 5 days, but it has crept back up.
My CC was debited the same day I handed my forms in, and with a travel date of 03/11/10, the officer said there was a good change of it being returned within two weeks, especially since they were handed over in person and checked by their staff.

I managed to speak to a person who works at the embassy. He says that with the snow and almost a week out of work as really screwed them over as they have thousands of applications. HE says that they are trying really hard to get turn this around. If there are taking too much time then the best solution is to contact careline and make sure that send an enquiry to washington.

Hello,
I am trying to renew my UK passport (it recently expired) and discovered that I can't even speak with someone when I call through to the British Consulate in Los Angeles (and the UK Embassy in D.C. as well) and that renewing passports has apparently been outsourced (and that one has to pay a fee just to talk with someone). I am trying to confirm which sections need to be filled out on the C1 form. It is the same form that one uses if they have never applied for a passport so I would like to know which sections I can skip since all that info at the beginning is already on file (as I will be including my expired passport as well). It seemed so much easier ten years ago when I could at least talk with someone on the telephone without having to pay through the nose to do so (it is already outrageous enough having to pay over 200 US dollars for the renewal fee).

BritAmerican,
As forms go, the passport form is very easy to complete and has Yes/No arrows for completions of the relevant sections. I'm not sure why you're having problems. If the the line says complete it, then complete it. Do make the assumption of 'why give them that information, they already have it on file'. If you worked on that basis, you'd mail in the passport with a cover letter saying 'renew it please!'.

We recently submitted my passport for renewal.
We calculate from the day that it was sent that we will have enough time for our April 2nd departure. We sent it mid February.
Then we realize the processing dates commences when the Credit Card is actually charged. It was charged on 17 of March. Now we're cutting it really close.
Is there a way to expedite the process, even if we need to pay an extra fee? Are there other methods or processes so that we can go on this trip on 4/2?
Thanks!

Hi, New to this, and I suspect, a bit technologically challenged (I fully expect this to turn up as a reply, rather than a post), but here goes:
I have to renew my passport this year, and my green card. Both would seem to be annoying. I am a little confused about the passport fees. I just went to the UKinUSA site, and find that they charge $217 including postage, whereas, other application sites seem to require Embassy fees of $205 (and just what is this? I don't remember paying that last time I renewed a decade ago, though I do remember a lot of annoyance - changed the fees after I had already paid, and refused to release my passport, that sort of thing), $49 for processing, and then around $25 for shipping. Anybody got any advice/answers?

I sent my renewal application off (with my old passport) to DC on 24 March via FedEx - nothing taken off my credit card yet either... so am also getting worried :(
Does anyone know how to chase a renewal application _before_ they take your fee? The Passport Helpline has told me (twice now) that there's nothing they can do until that happens, as I'm just not in their systems.
If the initial processing is going to take as long as the actual passport renewal itself, it'd be kinda nice if the helpline could at least confirm my old passport hasn't been appropriated by someone for a hit in Dubai!
Is there anything stopping you having a relative send the forms after you have filled them out and signed it, could you have a relative do it in the UK for you and mail you your passport back over? If that makes sense.
Carl.

I sent mine off March 11th. They didn't take any money out till April 9th and I finally got my new passport today, April 20th.
What worried me was that I called careline this morning not knowing it was arriving a few hours later and they could not find any record of my passport application, let alone a newly issued one. I since know it's because they misspelt my middle name on my original passport and transferred it over to my new one, hence the record mismatch. This sucks as I spent maybe $15 on the phone call this morning that wasn't needed as UPS called me about an hour later to tell me to expect an overnight package :)
At least it came. They probably have a major backlog right now because of the holiday season coming up. If it's not here in 5 weeks call the careline number.

Although I'm not sure I see what the point of the Passport Careline is, since they can't help you for the longer part of the application process (and it cost me ~20 dollars for the three phone calls I made to them to hear that they didnt know anything)

I wish I had found this forum before today! I sent off for passport renewal on April 18...bank account was debited this morning. Phew! Hopefully will have the passport before we travel in 3 weeks.

I have a question about countersignatures. The C1 renewal form isn't clear on whether you need someone to countersign it. On the FCO website, it suggests you don't need this if you still look like you did in the photo on your current passport. But then in the form itself it doesn't make the countersignature section optional. It mandates it and makes no mention of any exceptions. Do I really need to get a countersignature (given that I look the same as I do on my current passport)? I don't know any Brits or Americans out here who have "professional" titles, so getting someone to sign is going to be a hassle.
Thanks in advance if anybody can shed some light on this.

You just need folks who know you well enough. Do you know your Bank Manager? What about a pastor if you are a churchgoer. Dean from the Consulate has answered this one in the past and his advice was the same. Don't get too hung up about it.

As a follow up for those interested, I had an appointment at Peterboro passport office last wednesday at 11.30am. I was there for 10 mins, handed in the application form, 2 passport sized photos and then paid 129.50GBP for same day servie. I was told to comeback at 3.30pm later that day to collect my new passport which I did. Great service, quicker and currently cheaper than renewing it through Washington.
My wife posted her passport off on March 10th. Last week they charged her credit card for the $205.80 and she has still not received it. They need 4 weeks to do what Peterboro passport office did in 4 hours!!!

Embassy in DC received my application on 5/12. Two weeks later my credit card was charged. Passport was delivered this morning. Exactly 4 weeks from receipt of application, just like they state on the website. Didn't call the Careline.

Yes I renewed my expired passport and did NOT send any supporting documentation (birth or marriage certificate). My passport had been expired for 6 months.

Sent off renewal for myself and youngest Son on 20th May without any supporting documents for our recently expired UK passports. Had a US citizen friend sign the back of the photo's. Known her for 7 years, she has a science degree of some sort and has letters after her name, so assumed she would do!
Fees taken from my credit card two days ago, so am expecting new passports back in the next two weeks.
