A Fashion Model visa?? Say it ain't so !!

Posted on Jul 5, 2006 1:25:00 AM on Across the Pond blog - Orlandxo Sentinel. By Kelly Griffith.

"So, I'm perusing the government's U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Web site trying to be a faithful servant and not just some babbling blogger, you know, looking for something actual useful to tell you about.
And, there, I find some need-to-know info on the ever-popular H-1B visa.

They've filled their cap for 2007, but mark your calenders because starting April 1, 2007, you can make your petition for one for an employment start date of October 1, 2007.

In case you don't know, the H-1B visa is the one for workers that we really, really, really need in the United States. Engineers, computer programmers, high-tech workers, some college professors and, of course, FASHION MODELS!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh my God. (His name in vain.) Double-take. You are kidding me.
Rub my eyes, squint. Fashion m-o-d-e-l. There ya go.

So, if you really want to come to the U.S., you can 1.) Go to college and study real hard topics like science and math; or 2.) Stop eating all those toast soldiers (!!!).

Can you really believe we are giving H-1B visas to fashion models? I'm sure some American sack of bones in the Big Apple is very upset by this."

I am surprised that there hasn't been more genuine discussion on this subject - there have been a couple of responses on the blog but they only missed the point.

Doesn't it seem curious to anyone that people like Mel B (aka. Scary Spice), Robbie Williams, Billy Connolly and many other 'celebrities' find it so easy to say that they are now 'living in America' ? It doesn't seem to be a problem for them to 'emigrate' and live there seemingly open ended with no constant struggles to meet USCIS requiremnst.

Americans have this odd idea that people are underpaid on H1Bs so that is why they get the job..while it can happen that after you have worked for a company a few years on an H1B your wages can fall behind and you can't just walk away and find another job..when you are first offered the job it has to be at the same rate an American is paid..
The problem is not the people coming into the country taking work from Americans...the problem is jobs going out the country...
I've yet to met an American who is good at his job at all worried about H1B workers...its the ones that are not so good that worry...

I think they are under contract to a film or record company..on a visa for 3 year which can then be renewed yearly..with highly paid lawyers its not much of a problem...

I was wondering how a model would get an H1B..do they have degrees..because if they had to wait 12 years they would be well past their sell by date...

The Cap on H1Bs is filled for 07...so a start date for a model would be Oct 08...I can't see any using H1B myself...not when there are other visa's for those kind of jobs...

Wow ! This blog thread REALLY lit up !

There are 14 comments on there, suddenly, and some people are getting pretty angry.

Take a look:

Nothing to do with E2 - it's all about H1B - but it's still immigration and incoming workers.

Hello Peter

I have just taken a look at the blogs and noticed that Kelly has a link to expatsvoice great stuff

Kelly and I were supposed to meet this week but her editor keeps giving her different tasks. I know she is very keen for us to meet as soon as possible and will call her again to see when this can be arranged

I think Americans mix the H1B up with other visa's...
Badly trained US IT workers are grabbing onto the idea that they loss their jobs because of the H1B and not because they have no idea what they are doing...

Jobs are flying out the window to places like India where you can find cheap well trained workers..no-one can disagree with that..but that is little to do with the HIB visa..most workers who come here on that hope to stay here..no matter what country they are from..its not in their interest to take a low wage..and I can't see how they can under the terms of the H1B...unless someone is breaking a law somewhere...
