Daughter refused Visa to look after her sick mother
13 June 2007, 16:41

A woman who was deported from East Yorkshire has defied a ban on her entering the country, so she can be with her sick mother. Deborah Phillips has been refused a visa to stay in Britain, but has flown back because she couldn't bear to think of her Mum suffering alone. The Home Office has told her she may be forced to return to America any day now, but Deborah's praying the Immigration Minister will step in and let her stay.

This story was featured on Yorkshire TV's Calendar programme the other night. Deborah is from the USA, originally British but became a US citizen after joining the US Navy. Her and her young daughter came over to look after the Grandma, who had several mini-strokes. So it just goes to show, the compassinate visa sage could have ramifications in the UK too.

Maybe this is where the "reciprocal" part of the visa relationship comes into play? - sickening:( :fit:

If she was born British...how can they do this...unless its because she was in the USA forces...

I could be wrong, but the piece on TV implied she gave up her British citizenship when she joined the US Navy.

Kriz,
When the woman accepted US citizenship, perhaps she relinquished her UK citizenship. The UK does allow dual citizenship, and I believe the US does too. Although most countries are mad keen on people who want to have a foot in both camps.

I believe the USA only recently allowed dual citizenship - perhaps she had no choice but to give up her UK citizenship.
But it does make you think.....how many so called "asylum seekers" that were supposed to be deported from the Uk actually were put on flights - I seem to recall very few. As with authorities the world over it seems that they pick on those that try to play by the rules but get caught between the cracks. You can bet this woman is not sponging of the dole, she is saving the tax payer the cost of homehelp/nursing and why do they pick on her - because she plays by the rules - they know she is there, they know she is not going to abscond - so they can deport her easily. These situations are the ones when you would hope common sense would apply - however we all know - no matter what side of the pond your on - this is rarely the case.

New3s said recently around 1000 rapists, poedophiles and murders were supposed to be deported last year, but absconded.

What a disgrace, is there no common sense left anywhere nowadays?
