I was talking to a customer of mine today who is here on a H-1b, and used to live in California and Texas before moving to Florida. She told me that both these states had issued her drivers licenses that expired in 2020 and was astounded that Florida only issues for the length of the I-94. This got me to thinking (now my head hurts lol) is it just Florida, or do other states also use the I-94 when issuing a driver's license to immigrants, and if so then how on earth do illegals manage to get hold of drivers licenses?

Kirtida,
My understanding is that the DHS advise the state DMV's on issuing licences to non-americans with regard to security issues, but as most states are a law unto themselves for many things, what they specifically ask for regarding issue of 'their' license is a state, not federal thing. As far as the length of the licence and cost to us viz the locals, again it's the State of Florida which has chosen to take this money spinning 12 month licence route by changing the statute.
Perhaps we should ask our State Representative why this change was made and how discriminatory its to us, and not least when compared to other states. As non-voters, I suspect the reply might be to 'soak you foreigners who have no vote'!!:fit: :fit: :fit:

In Vermont you can have up to 4 years - but you must have a visa to cover that time. If you visa has expired (or you just got a 2 year visa) and your I-94 is current then they will issue up to the duration of the I-94. We therefore get about 2 years each time....at least you get another pop at maybe getting a decent photo!

I understood that they were going to standardize the timelimits so all states are the same. I know Colarado used to give 10 years as i have friends who used to live there, whether or not that has recently changed i dont know. The states where they give short duration are I suppose the ones where they have a large amount of immigration and like to keep an eye on people.

My DC license was also valid until the length of my authorised stay.

Well I did bring up this subject when being interviewed by the Sentinel reporter, and he agreed that it was a mainly Florida thing. I do agree though that atleast you do get another pop at a "decent" photo - but as I'm not really photogenic, it doesn't really make that much of a difference
We definitely cannot renew online either:(
