You cannot discriminate against one ethnic minority just because there happens to be a few bad apples in the bunch! There are many millions of muslims that are completely against the actions of the few - and you cannot tar everyone with the same brush!!

I seem to recall that the only 911 man tried was French of some mid eastern origin. On that same basis are the US going to apply the UK criteria to other countries?
I think this is yet again another one of those knee jerk, open mouth before engaging brain ideas that the US is justly proud of. I suspect that whoever came up with this idea on the way into work whilst stuck intraffic, has probably never thought of the wider, possibly retaliatory actions that could come from this measure should anyone be brave enough or stupid enough to put their name to it. Once again, the US is so full of its own ego. They should also remember Oklahoma as the perpetrators were home grown, non middle eastern, non muslim.
I think we should call these types of ideas "Titanic ideas'. They are floated, hit an obstacle and quickly disappear without trace.
IMHO of course

absolutely, my accountant in the U.K is muslim and what a lovely race, the majority of muslims are compassionate and caring.
like any race, one bad apple will TRY to spoil the reputation for the rest.

I wonder if they would dare try and enforce any restrictions on one of their own very famous Muslim's - The Great Mohammad Ali! By the way I am a Hindu, although I have been baptised and confirmed so could also class myself as a Christian, and have many Muslim, Christian,Buddhist and agnostic friends. What makes this even more laughable is that on all American forms that ask me for my ethnicity - I am classed as "other" as the Indian subcontinent is not recognised - Asian means Chinese or Japanese! And another point - since 9/11 - they have had a register of suspected terrorists available to all airlines and airports - which has resulted in many innocent people being detained and questioned/deported because they had the same name as a suspect! Have they stopped using this now and so are trying to find another way to "secure their borders"?

My Dad was a Muslim, but we were all brought up as Christians and we were all born in the Uk and brought up as such.
I have never been stopped by anyone in Authority regarding my origin, had plenty of name calling by a lot of so called fellow brits when we lived in the Uk
thats one of the many reasons we left the Uk 4 years ago and hopefully will never return !!!!

Just how would they know? Obviously if they were BORN in Pakistan then it would be on their passport but my understanding is these 'terrorists" were UK born. Do you think that a POE office can tell the difference between a Pakistani citizen and an Indian, Sri Lankan or Iraqi?

There are characteristics that distinguish between Pakistani, Indian, Sri Lankan and Iraqi - but I very much doubt that any POE here would be able to! Their main criteria seems to be based on family name - if it sounds Islamic - then be prepared for a grilling.

Yeah but Richard Reid (shoe bomber) is not really an islamic sounding name so wouldn't get stopped but Jemimma Khan (nee Goldsmith) might.....I don't think they've thought this one through.

See also this thread (http://http://www.expatsvoice.org/forum/showthread.php?t=2196) for convenience, which covers the same issue and has some interesting points such as by Britcan.
This is such ludicrosity. I have a friend who is British Muslim, but whose Parents are from India. As hinted above, how would they know he is not from Pakistan. Also my Grandparents lived in Lahore before independence (when the territory that is now known as Pakistan was part of India), I'm Hindu, but does that mean I get away with it because my Parents moved to territory that is continues to be known as India?
More importantly, who the hell is working within Government and thought this was a good idea?
I have another one of these crazy ideas, again it might be controversial but here goes. Why don't the USA and EU Governments share information on suspected terrorists, where there is evidence giving rise to suspicion. Enter those persons in a register and require those people apply for a visa until such time as they are proved innocent (so they can go back to VWP status) or they found guilty (so a ban can be enforced).

This would be way to simple for them - and I thought that there was supposed to be some kind of register anyway? I have actually spoken to USC's who were Caucasian, but were married to Muslims, and their names have "appeared" on this register and have had real grillings at POE, so go figure.
