My neighbours mother just come round to inform me we have skunks in the garden....and?? they have been there for 7 years...whats the problem...oh yes I remember you have a dog you want to leave in the garden barking all day...and it keeps jumping over our fence and going home smelling because its bullying a 6 inch baby skunk so why should I remove the one thing that keeps the dog indoors...or tied up...
They are not in my garden anyway...they are on the empty lot behind us...
If they becomes a problem to William then I will remove them...but William is not outside when the skunks use the garden...we just have to be careful of rabies...which we sometimes get in this town from the bats...

If she finds them to be problem then she should pay for pest control to come and remove them! Its a wonder the dog hasn't caught onto the fact that the skunk will spray it if it annoys it - so serves him right. And I agree with you - the owner should keep the dog under better control - just look at what happened to poor Ashley.

They have only had the dog a few months...and they just leave the poor thing in the garden all day...its bored silly...I don't go around removing the wildlife ...I learn to live with it if I can....we live in what was once forest...and a lot of the area still is...so until this cute little baby does something to us...its staying...I let the raccoons nest in the chimney for 6 weeks.. when the babies were old enough I got them out and put a cap on so they could not get back in....

Has anyone ever had the misfortune to experience their smell? Is it really that bad?

You just KNOW what it is the first time you smell it! We passed (didn't hit it) a road kill skunk in the pouring rain in our truck - within seconds the smell is in the truck and it took a DAY for it to go. It just permeates...I actually don't find the smell really that unpleasant...but its not something I'd want to have in my home. I suppose like 'farmyard' smells in the UK conjure up memories - skunk has that sort of 'earthy" smell!

You get used to it Sue...I don't find it that bad...the old males smell all the time...the females don't really smell and can make good pets...the female out the back will sit with me in the garden...I think the little one is one of her babies....

I could of done that I'm sure with the female who lives outback..I was out doing the garden one summer and she came over to me with her new babies...they were about 4 ft away...I could not move and the babies not knowing me were jumping around ready to spray...then she took them across the road....
My son hated it when the skunk would sit next to me while I was washing the car...or sitting in the garden....my daughter said they left me alone because I had black hair with a white streak running through it...my son said it could be cus I smell bad..don't you just love kids.......

Living in the sticks, we too have skunks and my 3 dogs were shall we say re-scented one day. Hot shot smelt bad, Ben worse....... but ZOE OMG! I dont know how many times she must have got it in the face, but it made me want to hurl.

One morning came out of my bedroom and walked down the hall wondering what the slight smell was, as i got to the lounge/dining room it was bad, through to the game room running to the pool door knowing what the smell was. I went outside and the 3 dogs had trapped this poor little thing in the corner of the pool pumps. They didnt hurt it, just wagging and barking. Phoned my neighbor asking what i should do with Zoe, she said tomato juice, to which I replied "Well, I have a jar of prego, will that do?" After fits of laughter from the other end, she said she would ring me back. Hubbs went out and bought 3 huge cans of tomato juice and we smothered Zoe in it. She was a lovely pink color for 2 weeks. And although the tomato juice dulled the scent ALOT it didnt totally get rid of the smell for about 3 weeks. Also where it must have sprayed the walls as it turned, we could smell it in the games room, I used several bottles of frebreeze OUTSIDE to try to kill the scent. So yes it can smell REALY bad, and once smelt, you can always recoqnize it. If you got to a zoo and see a grey fox, it smells the same as a skunk as a means of defense.

So I say, Take a can of tomato juice round to the neighbor and tell her if she chooses to neglect her dog by leaving it outside all day with no boundries, she should either get an underground dog containment system or to live with it. The skunk was their before her dog. Why should the skunk be punished.

My dogs choose to be out most of the time, they have an acre of land, and we periodically change the bounderies for new scents and areas to explore. They love to swim when it gets too hot, and we have an under roof cooling fine spray system. They are very spoiled.

The dog is now tied up...my son was worried because the back gardens are very hot in summer...and they have few trees for shade...I'm seeing animal control on Wednesday...they do HOA talks for us...I'll have a word with the lady cop there she is really nice....

Poor thing, tying it up is no solution either, why do people get pets if they cannot look after them? Away all day is a LIFE TIME to a dog, approx 1 week in dog years. And for this to be day after day!???
