Do you think it is a good idea to allow planning permission to build a huge mosque holding 70,000+ in London?
I am against the idea, so huge and a 911 waiting to happen and may regret this in the future

Dead against this. It turns religion into a competition of I am bigger than you and risks this venue being used as a stadium for religious lectures rather than a pure place of worship (and that is leaving aside the potential associations with terrorist funding). I am surprised the space is not being used for residential developments as we have such a Housing crisis in London. We don't need a Mosque to house 70,000. It is beyond ludicrous when there are other more pressing priorities. That space could also be used for a hospital or a school for the benefit of everyone and not just the few. It looks like it is the hugely developing East London (East of Docklands).
If you are going to have that space for a cultural purposes than have a multicultural religious center where people from all backgrounds can attend. However, as said above that last thing that London needs is another institution benefiting the few, whether it be Hindus, Muslims, Christians or whovever and especially in that area. Housing, or a state of the art school or a hospital has to the priority.

Totally agree with you Munish - this is utterly ridiculous given the more pressing need for housing or hospitals. Didn't even know that there were 70,000 muslims in London's east end? and what about all the mosques that are already there? are they being torn down to make way for housing etc????

against it, priority should be given to low cost housing, school or hospital

I see the difference between the US and UK is here in the US most immigrants try and integrate and become Americans whilst in the Uk there is little intergration and n no one wants to be a Brit ( I didn't and thst why we left and I am sure that is the same for most ex pats).

I do not see a problem with allowing any religion to build a 'supersite' for its worshippers. After all, the Anglican and Catholic religions have their own 'supersites' in the form of cathedrals.
However, at a 70K capacity, this is clearly a size too many and should be reined back to fit in with the surrounding landscape and not have a 'blot on the landscape' or a 'carbuncle' as our esteemed Charles would say.
Perhaps in the argument against it, the sizes of the other religious supersites in the UK could be highlighted, so that it would appear we are giving fair treatment to another religion. That way the authorities would be able to stand firm and argue sensibly against arguments of religious discrimination, which would no doubt surface if the planning application was turned down.
I don't really think that the majority of UK people want a 'Mecca' in London. Apart from the Bingo variety!!

The London Muslim population is significant. Certainly much more than 70,000. We are definitely at least talking in the hundreds of thousands so that would be the argument for it.

And that is the argument against - you'd think, weighing all the pros and cons, it would fail, but as they say, it ain't over tell the fat lady sings. Fat ladies, that reminds of another recent thread!
