First of all, hi everyone and what a brilliant site!
My husband is soon to qulaify as a Microsoft engineer and i am currently doing a degree to become a primary school teacher.
We have two children George 3 and Madeline 1.
We both want to live and work in the States and would appreciate your help re where to start, which visas etc. As i will have in dregree in primary teaching do you think that will help etc. Do you think it would be best for my husband to begin with a company in the UK and request a transfer perhaps.
Sorry for all the questions and i hope you guys can help, there is so much information out there, and we desperatley want this but so do thousands of others!!!

Microsoft engineers wer in great demand several years ago but not so much now
Best route is for husband to begin with a company in the UK and request a transfer.

Hello and :welcome:
If you are planning well ahead, say 3 years, he may wish to set up a uk company and if successful he can apply for an L 1 visa inter company transfer to set up a branch in the usa. You can get L 2 dependent and apply for work authorization
He could always try to find a job in the usa, and teaching might be an option but even if he was offered a job today all the visa numbers (65,000 pa) have been used up
Assuming he does get job offer (or you do for teaching) this would be a H1B visa and can lead to a green card. If you/he get job offer the visa applicaton cannot be submitted till April 08 for Oct 08 start date
You could always buy an existing business or set up one from scratch and apply for an E visa , but technically does not convert to a green card directly. I have known some people to succeed so much that their presence is required on a perminent basis and managed to get the company to sponsor for I 140 approval. If approved this is the go ahead to apply for a green card.
Heather Wilson of New Mexico has legislation in and co sponsor to amend the E visa from non immigrant to immigrant visa, not sure how this is progressing, if at all

Microsoft are moaning they don't have enough engineers in the USA...they have a problem getting over sea's workers into the States so plan to move part of the company to Canada...
The problem I see is 'soon to qulaify'...they do like you to have worked in your field even if only for a little while...
I would find a company for Sarah to run...and for Chris to work in the UK for a while and come over here to find work while Sarah owns the company...that is just my 2 cents...but I think you will find work easy enough if they don't have to pay to bring you into the country...and if you are not fussed what State you live in...

:welcome: Just to clarify that institutions of higher education are not subject to the H1-B cap so a teaching position with an employee that is a college or university would not pose problems regarding the quota.

True, but she is training to be a primary school teacher.
You do not say where abouts in the US, but it can be very difficult to get a US Schools to sponsor you for a work visa:
- Not very well paid, where I am often a second job for the benefits, salary is poor by UK standards.
- You would need a H Visa which costs, requires a lot of pre planning and allows a start from 1st October, after the school year has started.
Is your Husbands degree in IT, I doubt that the Microsoft qualifications would mean much, but for him to get sponsorship on a H the degree has to be in the same field.
Not wishing to be too despondent, but other countries may offer better opportunities.
