Not sure where to place this but I am sure someone will move it if they need to.
We are waiting for background checks to be done. It is taking way too long. I wonder what they are checking! We have no political affiliations, no criminal background, not even a parking or speeding ticket.
Anyone know how long this process usually takes and who we complain to?

Edited to explain better - background checks are the final part of the 'processing' of our green card app. supposedly!

Sorry - for our PR application. Currently 3.3 years 'in process'

If you have a common name then it can take up to a year. No harm in chasing them up.

FBI ..fingerprints are mostly dealt with in a few days ... the name check is most often the cause of delay

There may be many agencies involved with this stage

As of May 2007, USCIS reported 329,160 FBI name check cases pending, with approximately 64 percent (211,341) of those cases pending more than 90 days and approximately 32 percent (106,738) pending more than one year.

There are 31,144 FBI name check cases pending more than 33 months as compared to 21,570 last year

It is important to note that USCIS does not include within its backlog cases pending due to FBI name checks. There are 155,592 FBI name check cases pending more than six months that otherwise may be part of USCIS’ backlog

I don't think Heaps is a common name.

So how do we chase it up? USCIS say it is not them and you can't apparently contact the FBI directly.

We have a lawyer in Adam Putman's office trying to do that and getting nowhere fast. Apparently the USCIS had a big meeting last week and put everything on hold while they did that.

I hope someone was kicking their backsides about all this crap!

My son just returned yesterday from the fingerprints/photo session for the renewl of his green card and naturalization application. They said three months for the green card and 3 to six for naturalization interview.
Truth is HOW LONG IS A PIECE OF STRING ?

So we got the reply to our congressional enquiry - totally stunning - our application is IN PROCESS!!

Blow me down who knew?

SO we are stuck in FBI name check with thousands of others. We are seriously considering taking further action.

As Ray mentioned above, the FBI have a huge backlog, in regards to background checks. This is apparantly the 'hold up' with greencards at the mo.

Send an email to LB asking for her help in this matter, this will expidite the process.
