I need clarification please. After having read the above link, I as the spouse of an E2 visa holder am trying to work out whether in fact I did need to apply for an EAD. If you read it, it kind of gives you the impression that you do not have to??

Your reading a SS dept document
has no effect on the need for a EAD ..

You only need an EAD if you intend to work. If not you don't need one.

On the document that Ray gave the link to, which I believe is the announcemnet in the change in the issue of the SS# to spouses of E2 visa holders, there is an appendix to it which makes it very clear that whilst you don't need an EAD to apply for a SS# if your are an E2 spouse, you do need an EAD if you intend to work.
