Did anyone see this article today?

According to the Daily Mail, a record number of people left the UK last year heading for Spain, America, New Zealand and France.

A study by the Institute for Public Policy Research think-tank earlier this year said there are now 1.3 million British emigrants living in Australia.

Another 761,000 live in Spain, and 678,000 in the United States

I would be interested if its possible, to find out how many left the US last year? Does anyone know where this figure could be found?

Hi Debs,
Do you mean how many Brits returned to England or how many Americans left to seek their fortunes in other countries?

Love Anniexxx

From reading forums...more Brits leave OZ ..NZ and Canada than the USA...

I have no idea how to find out the numbers...

in the last two years, 10 members of our family have left the UK, my aunts/uncles moved to Aussie, and us to the states.
funny, i was saying yesterday to my hubbie steve, i wonder how many brits have come over here, and for what ever reason have returned to the U.K, perhaps not being able to settle, visa problems? etc

I don't know if its humanly possible to find out just how Brits have left the US, but if it is, I'm sure it would would be a high figure - especially lately as its getting more and more difficult for Brits to stay.

Most of us know that the only thing the government pay attention to is lost $$$$$$ so if it were to be presented to them in this way, would they start to pay attention???

I really don't know why people get so uppity about the numbers leaving a particular country. We live in a global economy. We live in an internet world where information and knowledge about the rest of the world is click away. We live in a world of mass air travel, much of it long haul. We live in a world where people are becoming ever more educated and qualified. We live in a world where jobs are moved routinely around the world. We live in a world where countries, like businesses, want the best people on board to be able to compete effectively in the global marketplace. So why is it news?
As a result of that increasing higher education we all develop, we become ever more aware of social and political implications the world over. People are no longer content to sit there and be crapped on from a great height as was in the past, they get up and move.
It's like the industrial revolution on a grand scale.

I obviously hope you don't think I'm being uppity. I would be interested to know the number of Brits leaving the US as for those of us here who want to stay it is becoming increasingly more difficult. Yes we do live in a global world now but does that mean than when we get crapped on by the government of that country we have to up sticks and move??

debd, i think what will start to happen, is similar to how people use this forum. people work together to change things, people have ideas and change things, stand up and work together.
where as years ago, there was always one person that tried to change things for the better then ended up being assassinated by governments the world throughout, JFK, martin luther king, Princess Diana, John Lennon, etc, all major global icons, that tried to change things for the better, some did, however.
but this time around people are waking up, and working not as one person, but in their thousands.

I wonder how so many Russians are here when they cannot get an E2 visa as Russia is not a party to the treaty whic gives birth to the E2

I have several customers who are Russian, and they are here on the O visa, as they are gymnasts and acrobats.

Can Russians take part in the GC Lottery? That might explain the numbers.

DebD,
Of course I don't think you're getting uppity. I just find that we seem to be pre-occupied with the fortunes of the UK, when we chose to leave it behind. Personally, I don't have a beef with the influx of economic migrants to the UK from the new EU countries. After all, isn't that we've done by coming here - seeking a better life?
In any case, there are a myriad reasons why folks leave the UK and it's not just economics. It can be health, wealth, well being, a whole host of things, so knowing a total number still doesn't answer any particular question.
As far as Russkies in the US, isn't it the you can come here if you live in an oppressive country by virtue of regime? When it was the USSR, didn't they welcome Commies who wanted to accept the capitalist dream or have I been watching too many Hollywood films? Take Cuba with the wet foot, dry foot, athletes foot?

Russians are no longer eligible for the lottery, they used to be, but sufficient numbers of Russians are now in the US, which now precludes them as that section of diversity is at an acceptable level.

Many "stans" are still eligible tho - Uzbekistan, Kazakstan etc.

Many are probably students, that were then able to transfer find a employer to sponsor.

Don't know if they ever had political asylum status.

There is a South African family I know of that were deported about a month ago, they are now in Canada claiming political assylum to return.

Yes I did chose to move, my point through this is that I would like to find out how many Brits have left the US so that we can further strengthen our case with the government and show them that the Brits are no longer standing for the crap thats being given out by the American government, why is it so difficult for them to let people stay who are willing to work and support themselves??? It would be easier to be an illegal here and wait for an amnesty that it is at the moment to do things properly and be allowed to stay.

I do have a problem with the amount of immigrants going into England when they seem to get preferential treatment to the people who were born and raised there.

I will always think of England as my homeland, whether I go back permanently or not, but I must say that when I went to visit in March I was shocked by just how different everything was - ie Health leaflets in 24 different languages, Polish road signs in Norfolk, not feeling safe in my hometown,
