Hello Friends, (my gawd - I am sounding like Nancy Grace!) :D
I am going home in November and returning with my Dad, the very lovely Granddad Ben.
He will be staying with us from November 13th until January 31st. Travel Insurance is sorted and everything else is in place but he has just told me his Passport expires in April 2008.
I have researched on the web and cannot find out if you still need to have 6 months remaining on your passport when you leave the US.
Anyone know?
Ta very much in advance of an avalanche of replies. ;)
Love x

Think that is still the case. I would call the airline he is flying on and call Dean at the British consulate

Thanks for the advice Sharon.
I went on BA.com and unfortunately their section of the website regarding passport requirements is under contruction. I followed a link they gave for further info and eventually, many links later, ended up on the US Embassy website in London.
I had looked there earlier, but found nothing.....I was looking at the wrong part of the site as I found the information I needed in the Consular FAQ's section........here is what it said:
"Does my British passport have to be valid for six months beyond my date of departure from the United States?
No, if your passport is not valid for at least six months beyond your date of departure from the United States, it will not affect your eligibility to travel. The United States has an agreement with the United Kingdom automatically extending the validity of a passport for six months past the passport's expiration date. Therefore, your passport need remain valid only for the duration of your stay in the United States.
If you are traveling visa free under the Visa Waiver Program and your passport is not valid for 90 days, you will be admitted into the United States until the date on which the passport expires."

Thanks for your help!

Hi,I dont think he will have enought time on it.
We had to renew our passports the other year in Madrid before coming over on our Xmas Holiday as we were in a simular situation to your Dad.
I think if he put's in now there should'nt be a problem.

The US Embassy in London site, also specifically states when applying for your visa that the 6 month period is not needed for UK applicants.

I would think so, i think the date is to cover you if you should go over for any reason, but if your in UK with a UIK passport I wouldnt think it would matter.
Dont know definitely though

My understanding is - and I could be wrong - is it is at the english end the problem lies - they require you to have the 6 mths on before you leave or arrive..... dontever think its been a problem on the US side. Gwen check UK immigration!!

Hi our son arrived and his passport just had 6 months minus 2 days and they were going to send him home , lucky enough he got a nice guy for interview and they said they would allow him in this time. He stayed for 6 weeks. My dad renewed his before he came in as he had only 6 months left and we didnt want to take a chance.
When we did our visa, however we only had 3 mths left and were told that was ok, then when we arrived here in America we sent off our passports and renewed them..

Thanks everyone for your comments.....much appreciated. :D
I have been researching to see if my Dad would need the 6 months left on his passport when returning to Blighty incase of problems that end, but I have not been able to find out this particular nugget of information.
Never mind though, I have advised him to renew it now as the wait times are around 2 - 3 weeks.....this way he will have nothing to worry over and neither will I!
He is now concerned about paying his car tax and insurance, which will both be due when he is over here.......
I have gently told him that due to the wonders of modern technology I can help him do that from over here!
Bless him.
Kind regards, xx

Bless TP!
I would advise renew, just to be on the safe side. And will give him 10 years with out worrying coz you'll be getting the hassle over and done with now.
