Hi

Yes the same thing happened to my friends recently

I really can not understand why there is a simple document , like notice of action we could showwhen renewing our licence

I am sure the DL office could just check the current case status and providing it does not say delcined then just re-new

Most people do not like having to carry our passports around

Its even worse than that, they ask you for the same stuff if you just go in the driving license center to change address never mind renew, we didnt have it with us and they took our licenses off us and gave us a piece of paper each until we came back with our documents.

This is a question similar to the original. Our E2 visa expires in about 6 month...our driving permit expires the same day. As we all know it is taking forever for E2 visa renewal we will apply for a I-94 extention. However we were told that this was not enough to renew driving permit - that we needed a visa.......so anyone got any experience of this? We (foreigners on E2) are quite unusual up here so I wouldn't be suprised if they have just got it wrong.

I know we had the run around every time one of us got a license...each time it was different...hubby needed nothing but his SSN...I needed to take in everything but the kitchen sink... my daughter was asked for nothing because she was with a driving school...
How long can you drive on a Brit license in Vermont...we were told 1 year here in MA..but our Ins company says 2 years....if you move here from a lot of European countries you just swap your license in...no test...you only need to show you drive on the America side of the road if you are English..

InnVic,
Our E2 Visa expired in 2002 and we maintain status with I-94's. What happens is that post 911 driving licences for foreigners were slowly changed so that the licence expired when the I-94 expired, ie every 2 years. Thats what should happen, although I know some people who have had their licences renewed for shorter and longer periods, but that is what it should be (that could be just down to dumb staff). The way you renew is to take along your passport and the renewed I-94 + all the other garbage to the DL office and they issue a renewal licence. Problem is because you can't apply to renew your I-94 by mail more than 45 days before it expires and the USCIS takes longer than 45 days to process the renewal, your licence will always expire before you get the fresh I-94, UNLESS your Visa is current in which a trip to, in your case Canada and youl renew the 94 that way. If you haven't got your new 94, but have applied to USCIS for it and have the official USCIS receipt, the DL people should issue you with a 30 day non-photo paper licence to keep you moving. At the 30 day stage, I guess you go back in for another 30 day licence. In FL we pay the same price for our 2 year licence as US folks pay for their 5 year licenses. As you are in a different state, I would seriously suggest you check out your state website for DL's and that should tell you your states arrangements, which may differ slightly to Florida. Needless to say, its yet another pain hurdle we have to put up with. Americans in the UK on the E2 equivalent incidentally get their UK licenses granted till they are 70!!!!! Who says we have reciprocal arrangements?

Myself and my daughter, getting her learner permit, both got ours on I94 receipts. We got the paper for 30 days and then got the licences in the post before the I94s had arrived. Not every office will do it though - it's best to ring first and ask. We had to go to the other side of Orlando from where we are to get it.

My Licence expired with my L-1 on July 12. New I-94 was issued with my approval notice on July 21.

Have to thank Zoe (Charliesmum) for her advice as this was the first time that I found myself in this situation.

Called the Driver Licence ofice on OBT and made an appointment. Turned up with the new I-94 & old licence. In & out within 15 minutes. New licence on the way.
