Hi

Does anyone know how to tell if a snake is harmful ?

I heard somewhere you could tell by the shape of its head !

Hi Sue

There was an excellent article in one of the 'local' pages of the Orlando Sentinel earlier this year that had photos and descriptions of the four 'deadly' snakes that are native to Central Florida. Don't recall the head shape being mentioned...

I don't have a link to the exact article, but maybe the following helps?

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/custom/growth/orl-snakes0506jun05,0,823490.story?coll=orl-news-growth-special

Okay, just had a better look at the link I provided above and on the left there is a photo gallery with info and pictures of the four nasty ones in Central Florida.

You need to know what the dangerous ones look like, the rest are harmless! Venomous snakes are cottonmouth, water moccasin, coral snake, diamondback. Learn what they look like and everything else is ok. Lots of black racers around, they can bite but arnt venomous.

If we EVER get our E2 my hubby has a job with a huge pest control company, he is the guy to ask about the horrible, crepy crawlies....so you can always ask me and ill ask him whats safe to touch and what you should run screaming from like a big girls blouse :p

Yep,
Funny one happened where I live, all these big American & Floridian men were gathered around a big snake with a spade ready to whack it one when a 10 year old girl walked upto ad picked it up and proceeded to give them a lesson on how to differentiate between black snakes.

Someone told me to look in it's mouth, I told them no way was I going to be close enough to the snake to take the time to look in it's mouth.
