Hi everyone- I have just had this email from Number 10 approving a petition request I had sent to them, please all sign and forward the link to everyone/other expat sites you know!!:D
Your petition has been approved by the Number 10 web team, and
is now available on the Number 10 website at the following
address:
http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/USAImmigration/
Your petition reads:
We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Talk
seriously to the President of the USA about the so called
"special relationship" ,so that immigration can be made fairer
to Brits who are excluded from the Green Card Lottery.
The Bill for the Green Card Lottery introduced by Senator
Edward Kennedy, came into being a while back but English and
Scottish and Northern Irish Citizens are excluded from entering
the lottery.
The argument for this is that the Brits have a better chance of
getting into the USA via "other visa methods" as they have a
good level of education. This seems unfair bearing in mind that
the Irish Education system is just as good! What happened to
the special relationship? Lets make it a fair playing field.
Thanks for submitting your petition.

That just don't make sense ...
And its about the only fair system there is..
after the 92-94 period when the Irish got 40% of the
numbers...
Brits thinking they are special will be their downfall

If you read it, I do say that Scottish,English and Northern Irish are excluded.... I was born in Scotland - I was just trying to do something for everyone, not say that the British are special. We are'nt the ones going on aboit the "Special Relationship" all the time, the USA do as well!

It should be abolished.
The argument for this is that the Brits have a better chance of
getting into the USA via "other visa methods" as they have a
good level of education.
This is not the allegeded reason, due to visa numbers from counties concerned, Mexicans can not enter either.
Strictly speaking its not nationality, some Bits I know have applied and won.

Can't knock you for trying, but the reason Brits are excluded is to make it a fairer playing field for other countries. Many, many, many Brits have already made it here, so we are blocked from the lottery to give other nations with lower immigration numbers more of a chance to move over.

I have signed it and feel a Lottery should be open to all and anyone. Not all brits can afford to buy a business or have relatives in the USA and the only change they will ever have of moving here,

And even if you buy a business you don't have the security of a green card....
P.S If you already have a visa E2 Li etc.. can you still enter the lottery (if from qualifying country?)

Exactly - I wish you all the best on this, but remember the lotterys actual name is Diversity Lottery....Brits are excluded not because we can afford to come here using other ways, but because so many Brit already come here using other visas...if less Brits came here unsing E2, L1, H1B etc then it would be open to us.
Again I wish you all the best on this though.

Well I would be excluded no matter what as they count you based on your country of birth not citizenship - and there ain't no way they are going to allow Indians in on the lottery. :(
