I have bright house for my cable and internet (easiest for me at the time as many neighbors had problems with Verizon etc) However I decided against using them for the Phone and I use Vonage instead, good rates and if you go for the full $24.99 package per month it is unlimited calls not only in the US but also to the UK and other international countries. You can even get a UK number for another $10 a month meaning anyone in the UK can call you for a local call. When I signed up I got a FREE wifi router as well which meant I plugged one phone in there and have others around the house. Does not need to have the PC on either like many other VOIP.
Of course only down side is if you lose broadband then you also lose phone, but seeing as most folk have mobile (sorry cell) as well I decided that was a minor issue. You can also divert calls from Vonage to cell if line goes down so in theory you don't miss calls.
Even though I am stuck in the UK at the moment I don't miss calls as Vonage email when a message is left so I can pick it up.
Works for us.

Hi

Its an internet phone company. If you have a good broadband supplier, than it can be as the total cost could be cheaper. However if your internet is connection is as flakey as yours is, then you'll recieve a lot of dropped calls, as it will drop your call everytime your internet connection drops.

Skype has been our lifesaver - Picto uses it too. My two year old can use it - she just hits a button on the laptop & calls daddy. We have a webcam too & so she can see & talk to him for free for hours on end literally at the press of a single button. A number of our friends in the UK have it too & we occ chat to them - it's much easier if you have speakers in your laptop then you're not tied to the headset and can use it as a speakerphone. My husband uses it to call landlines too & swears by it. He also uses it to instant message his colleagues.

If you don't have a great broadband connection it would probably drive you insane but we couldn't have survived this year without it.

www.skype.com

you can download it for free - I've never paid skype a penny. (think it costs to call landlines) - have to assume that one day soon the party will end & they'll start charging.

HI we have skype to I dont know what I would have done with out it. Its free and you can see your family in the uk and talk to them for hours. I managed to see my grandfather on skype and talk to him about a month before he passed. I talk with my mum most days on it. Get all your family to download it free

Even all

Anneke and I use skype atlest 3 times a day, more on the weekends. When you only see them every 2/3 months its great. Webcam is good too, espesically when you see a background of sunshine and realise what you are working towards. We have all family and friends all on skpye. As Victoria said it's free and if your computer has speakers, you are set. We got our skype phones with skype disk from Walmart from about $20.

Christmas is coming up, Skype phones all round for those across the pond (across the water, we have a friend in South Africa on skype) and whoever the best provider is for US calls.
