I was told by my VA that they refuse to deal with the 'public' at all and will only respond properly to VA correspondance!!!

When they starting sending the generic response out there was a way of getting emails answered which was by putting a reference at the beginning of the subject line. The embassy would then filter out emails. Only problem was they changed the reference every week.
I originally got the reference from one of their numbers (can't remember which - sorry) by explaining what I was after.
Sorry but this does not really answer your question. Wonder what happens to the people who do not file through a VA etc.

Technically you can its not to be relied upon, or really worth it. There's only one email address which is very generic. Normally they just ignore you, although sometimes with persistence, you can get a response. They do take a while to come through as the emails have to be forwarded from department to department.

Thanks all - it was an automatic response. They later emailed back, said it had been received & processed & was with their courier serivce. We called the service & they confirmed they have it. Hurrah....
I assume Chris is right & that the reference helped - we put the reference that was on the top of the dreaded 221g Form in the email header.

Out of interest, why did Hubby send passport after interview?
I have heard of people resubmitting requested info following interview with passport to be granted visa.
But otherwise I thought they kept passport there and then.
(In fact I had to knock on the window after my interview to get my passports back as M.O. forgot to give me them along with other ORIGINAL documents which we discovered later and took ages to get back, hence how i found out about ref codes - not surprising the state her desk was in)

because the corners were curling and therefore it was 'damaged' and they wouldn't put the visa in & made him get a new one - despite the fact that he had merrily entered the US with it the week before & hadn't said a dicky bird.. Ours is not to quesion why...just make sure you get yourself a spanking new passport before your renewal (I got into trouble as I didn't have a clean page & they stuck it on the back page & everytime I came into the US with it I got a lecture at immigration & told off that the Embassy had done this & then forgotten to put my EAC # on my visa (clearly my fault...)

I've clarified for Emma but will just clarify here - the Interview itself wasn't a 221g but when he had to return his passport he was given a form 221g to return the passport with - which had all sorts of nasty boxes that the Embassy can tick re insufficient info etc.
Hence our panic that it would be put in the 221g pile and it would be another 32 weeks till we heard from them but for once they surpassed expectations.
