Obama says he didn't know aunt's illegal status
By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer Nedra Pickler, Associated Press Writer – 18 mins ag
CHICAGO – Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama said Saturday he didn't know his aunt was living in the United States illegally and believes that laws covering the situation should be followed.
The Associated Press found that Obama's aunt had been instructed to leave the country four years ago by an immigration judge who rejected her request for asylum from her native Kenya. The woman, Zeituni Onyango (zay-TUHN on-YANG-oh), is living in public housing in Boston and is the half-sister of Obama's late father.
A statement given to the AP by Obama's campaign said, "Senator Obama has no knowledge of her status but obviously believes that any and all appropriate laws be followed." Traveling with Obama in Nevada, campaign strategist David Axelrod declined to elaborate on the statement, but said: "I think people are suspicious about stories that surface in the last 72 hours of a national campaign."
The campaign said it was returning $260 that Onyango had contributed in small increments to Obama's presidential bid over several months. Federal election law prohibits foreigners from making political donations. Onyango listed her employer as the Boston Housing Authority and last gave $5 on Sept. 19.
Onyango, 56, is part of Obama's large paternal family, with many related to him by blood whom he never knew growing up.
Obama's father, Barack Obama Sr., left the future presidential nominee when the boy was 2, and they reunited only once — for a monthlong visit when Obama was 10. The elder Obama lived most of his life in Kenya, where he fathered seven other children with three other wives. He died in a car crash in 1982.
Obama was raised for the most part by his mother and her parents in Hawaii. He first met his father's side of the family when he traveled to Africa 20 years ago. He referred to Onyango as "Auntie Zeituni" when describing the trip in his memoir, saying she was "a proud woman."
Obama's campaign said he had seen her a few times since that meeting, beginning with a return trip to Kenya with his future wife, Michelle, in 1992. Onyango visited the family in Chicago on a tourist visa at Obama's invitation about nine years ago, the campaign said, stopping to visit friends on the East Coast before returning to Kenya.
She attended Obama's swearing-in to the U.S. Senate in 2004, but campaign officials said Obama provided no assistance in getting her a tourist visa and doesn't know the details of her stay. The campaign said he last heard from her about two years ago when she called saying she was in Boston, but he did not see her there.
Onyango's refusal to leave the country would represent an administrative, noncriminal violation of immigration law, meaning such cases are handled outside the criminal court system. Estimates vary, but many experts believe there are more than 10 million such immigrants in the U.S.
The AP could not immediately reach Onyango for comment. When a reporter went to her home Friday night, no one answered the door. A neighbor said she was often not home on weekends. Onyango did not immediately return telephone and written messages left at her home.
Onyango was instructed to leave the country by a U.S. immigration judge who denied her asylum request, a person familiar with the matter told the AP. This person spoke on condition of anonymity because no one was authorized to discuss Onyango's case.
It was unclear why her request was rejected in 2004. A spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Kelly Nantel, said the government does not comment on an individual's citizenship status or immigration case.
Information about the deportation case was disclosed and confirmed by two separate sources, one a federal law enforcement official. The information they made available is known to officials in the federal government, but the AP could not establish whether anyone at a political level in the Bush administration or in the McCain campaign had been involved in its release.
Onyango's case — coming to light just days before the presidential election — led to an unusual nationwide directive within Immigrations and Customs Enforcement requiring that any deportations before Tuesday's election be approved at least at the level of the agency's regional directors, the U.S. law enforcement official told the AP.
The directive suggests that the administration is sensitive to the political implications of Onyango's case coming to light so close to the election.
The East African nation has been fractured by violence in recent years, including a period of two months of bloodshed after December 2007 that killed 1,500 people.
In Boston, Lydia Agro, communications director for the Housing Authority, said Onyango had been screened and approved for public housing as an "eligible non-citizen" when she moved in in 2003. She said the authority is not notified of deportation orders and did not know Onyango was related to Obama until two days ago.

On the question of if he knew she was illegal though - how much do any of us know about distant relatives? You ever seen other peoples green cards/marriage certificates,/driving permits etc?? Its just the press clutching at straws in another attempt at a smear.
We all know the immigration system is a nightmare - how many here on E2 get asked if they are citizens? No American really understands the ins and outs of foreign born folk living here legally - our local Senator didn't even know what our visa was (he does now!!!!!)

From what I've read he has seen her since she moved here and does talk about her.. ....My worry is that this woman could get kicked out the country before Tuesday...we have no idea why she did not get her visa...I am on the other hand upset that she gets housing in an area I pay for in State tax...when my son and his girlfriend can't get any help...this will be a point I'll make in my first of many letters to the son of God...sorry Obama should he get in...

Its not THAT close. She was the sister to his biological father - but his father left when Obama was two. He may have spoken to her (people come out of the woodwork when friends/family become 'famous") but that doesn't mean that they were close.

As far as I can make sense of it, he went to Indonesia with his stepfather and was enrolled in the school system there. On the enrollment paperwork, it says he's Indonesian (he would have had to take Indonesian nationality to be eligible) and Muslim (another prerequisite, I think - but parents will always use their own faith in such circumstances).
Indonesia doesn't recognise dual citizenship, so his stepfather would have renounced the child's US status.
There are those who claim that, despite being *born* a US National (required to run for the Big Job), the fact that he (ie, his father) renounced it, means he is now just a Naturalised Immigrant. Semantics, maybe, but there just might be some mileage in the argument if and when the Ultimate Sulk strikes next week.
I am not an attorney... but I once played one in The Archers :)

To be honest he'd not be my first choice - I'm Tory born and bred, loved Maggie and still believe she was the best thing thats happened to the UK since Winston Churchill gave the world the "V" so to find myself infavor of a "liberal" candidate is a very alien state - however the alternative is WAY too scary so I have to plump for the lesser of two evils.

I did say his stepfather would've had to have done it.
But, on the contrary, for an adult, renouncing US citizenship is simply a case of taking and signing an Oath of Renunciation before a US consular official.
Anyway, I decided to check. In this alleged incidence, it would've been no easy task; probably impossible. I quote:
Parents cannot renounce U.S. citizenship on behalf of their minor children. Before an oath of renunciation will be administered under Section 349(a)(5) of the INA, a person under the age of eighteen must convince a U.S. diplomatic or consular officer that he/she fully understands the nature and consequences of the oath of renunciation, is not subject to duress or undue influence, and is voluntarily seeking to renounce his/her U.S. citizenship.

I know black friends of mine are worried that he can't deliver...and how that will hit their kids....I just don't want to see people let down by someone they expect so much from... already he is telling us it could take 4 years to even start to put things right...people will not give him that long..well not the ones that he has spend so much time getting to the polls...I know a few I talk to online are hoping for help next week and are expecting it that soon...

I remember reading somewhere that there's a common pattern. As a student, you probably start out leaning Left. Once you have a decent job, you veer Right... but you moderate from that in later life.

Or like me you are born ankle deep in Socialism and the first words you learn are "Go Home Yank". Then you join the labour movement and you and your pals bring down the Heath Government. Then you get married and become a father and the scales fall from your eyes and you see that the intellectuals you are rubbing shoulders with are highly intelligent and as thick as p...s t. One of them tells you the following: "For a materialist, life is so simple; we are right and they are wrong and must be stopped from propagating their wrongness." and then becomes a Left Labour MP. You realise that all these psychic epidemics: Socialism, Fascism, Communism, Nazism and Liberalism are secular religions for people who cannot believe in God { because, you see, they are too intelligent ] but need to believe in something. Many people believe the Brits are atheists. Not so. A Brit prefers to find his own way to heaven. Most Brits are anti-clerical and a lot of it has to do with our history. We are also anti extremist: when the Labour Party showed it's true colours when Maggie got to be PM, the Labour Party lost 2/3rds it's supporters and the unions half their membership. I have never been back to Blighty for 33 years because the Brits irritate me but I have full faith in their underlying commonsense.

Many people believe the Brits are atheists. Not so.
According to a Financial Times/Harris poll conducted in 2006, only 17% of those sampled claimed to be atheist.
http://www.harrisinteractive.com/news/allnewsbydate.asp?NewsID=1131
I sought out that information only because this topic frequently crops up in conversation here and the assumption is that we're all either Atheist or Muslim in Britain.
Conversely, the fact that 35% of the British believe in the existence of any supreme being doesn't necessarily mean they're Christian, of course.
Anyway, I'm off to paint my face blue and sit in a tree.

It's one of those hijacked words that's lost its original meaning, sadly. These days, it's been boiled-down to mean non-Christian. It originally encompassed rural-dwellers (and Heathens lived in the heathlands) whose entire existence was, sensibly enough, governed by the seasons and sundry natural phenomena. A far more tangible system of beliefs, really.
Early churches were often sited at special Pagan places (atop a hill; next to a spring, etc) and decorated with carvings of oak leaves, woodwoses and an assortment of Pagan emblems to get bums on seats. It was the only way to get a full house and allow the bishop to get his "commission". Early pyramid selling?
As Paul Elliot said up there ^^ somewhere: A Brit prefers to find his own way to heaven. Most Brits are anti-clerical and a lot of it has to do with our history. But any suggestion of Paganism - especially over here - and all manner of laughable rituals flit through peoples' minds.

I must be so naive - I thought we were all supposed to be the children of God - irregardless of which religion we believe in? And why is it such a big deal for Obama, when Bush openly said he was told by God that he would win the election in 2000!!! And why is everyone so petrified that he is a Muslim (which he is not)???? Not all Muslims are radicals or extremeists - look at one of the most admired sportsmen in this country - Mohammad Ali!!! Unlike the UK - I don't believe that you have to be a Christian to be able to be President of the US, as they are not "head" of the church. Wasn't the US originally populated by those escaping persecution for their religious beliefs??? This kind of "hysteria" and "paranoia" saddens me deeply.
As for whoever becomes President - it is going to be a long hard road to recovery and anyone who claims otherwise (and Obama has Not) is misleading or downright lying.

He was born in Hawaii and so although it is not on the mainland - it is still part of the USA. I too would love to see the constitution changed so that naturalised citizens could also run for President as they can for every other post. I would then vote for the Governator :tu:;)
And there was me thinking if you were born on the Isle of Wight you were not a Brit........:rofl::rofl::rofl:

If you do a quick Google search, you'll find there's a worrying collection of oddballs who have that very theory.
Nostradamus is like daily horoscopes, squint enough and it'll fit your purposes:
The great empire will be torn from limb,
The all-powerful one for more than four hundred years:
Great power given to the dark one from slaves come,
The Aryana will not be satisfied thereby.
According to my "stars" today, I'm going to meet a tall, dark strangler...
The Anti Christ should come from Europe...not a strange little known country called Hawaii...;)
Maybe Arnie fits the bill better..

I can see it now...Obama gets in...we find out he is not American but we change everything so he can stay the leader of the USA...he buggers it all up like they always do...Arnie comes along to save the day....everyone falls to their feet in wonder at this great man who can save us from the hell we are now in...bingo ..we have the real Anti Christ...wow...you heard it here first folks....LOL

If Obama is to be the 1st black President of America, by the same yardstick, Churchill was the 1st American Prime Minister.

I don't like the Governor of Florida, so I guess that makes me an Anti Chris. Is that close enough??
Anyway, why all this preoccupation with relatives?? First we have Obama's Aunti e and now we have Christ's Anti. What is with you lot??
I quite like the idea of a Governator. The goose stepping down Pennsylvania Avenue will look quite cute!!! The Oval office will be turned into a gymnasium and all the hangers on will be required to pull their 'weights' or be terminated.
We would save a fortune on the presidential Limo as all Arnie needs is a Harley and he usually knicks that from somebody on the street anyway.
Of course the Irish would be in their, with the Sarah O'Connor Chronicles. Or even Des O'Connor!!!:D:D:D:D:D:D

Somewhere, I have an e-mail from his campaign people, politely declining my offer to make "Crist is Risen" bumper stickers.

Whaaaat...? It's true!
For years, I managed quite nicely with a greasy old paper bag housing two or three 60w Osrams... I've been forced to acquire an old mail sorter and keep a running inventory of them here.

AS I say to my guests (and anyone else that will listen) 300 milion people in this country and these are the best you can come up with????????
I loved Maggie too,
She may not have got everything right but at least she had the courage of her convictions

Sorry Lady I'm gonna have to call you on this one. I find it strange that you think its okay to take 20K from the Taxpayer but then complain about Obamas Aunt - and I quote....
""I am on the other hand upset that she gets housing in an area I pay for in State tax...when my son and his girlfriend can't get any help..."
You don't think thats a little hypocritical? Its okay to take handouts for you - but not someone else who may be in need?
With regard for Maggie - I felt that my tax money was in pretty safe hands and I was happy to pay my share - thats the only way a society can work for everyone.....and she didn't buy my vote - I voted for her because I respected her as a leader.
Of course he must have known about her. Any update?
