Just wondering with all the different proposals/opinions coming out that deal with immigration, which one do you think will pass? or is a good idea?

Frist:a bill addressing only enforcement and border security. A increase in the number of border guards, more fencing along the Mexican border and faster deportation of illegal immigrants.
McCain/Kennedy: a proposal that would give some of the 12 million illegal aliens living in the country an opportunity to earn citizenship. Undocumented immigrants to apply for green cards after six years of good behavior -- provided they also pay back-taxes on their wages and $2,000 in fines.
President Bush: temporary work permits for people from other countries who break the law to fill jobs few Americans want.

Representative Tom Tancredo(opinion): securing the borders and aggressively discourage employers from hiring undocumented immigrants; anyone here illegally should have to return to their native countries and be required to apply for citizenship like everybody else.

Dream Act:would allow certain immigrant students to begin the path toward legalization have completed a four-year, two-year, or non-profit trade school degree; or remain a student in good standing for at least two years in a four-year program; or have served in the U.S. armed forces for at least two years;

I know I'm missing a few, Specter Bill, Sensebrenner Bill..etc.

The Dream Act seems to have more support this time round than it did a few years ago so hopefully this time it will go through, a shame it is not more far reaching though,

Lots of mention of this on the Senate floor today from the Dems side -- I had C-Span's coverage on in the background most of the day. Heard Kennedy, Kerry and Reid all express support for it.

Yes everyone is saying it has a good chance of going through now, wheras it had little support before. My neighbour is big in Rotary person and he told me they are supporting it, not as I am saying that is anything compared to Kerry and the big democrats but it shows there is a wide range of support this time around.

It wont cover yours unless it takes a long time to enact, Karyn. You have to have been here five years before enactment to be covered. Yours have been here for three so unless they take two years to make it law...... well you never know I suppose, they arnt exactly quick on some things, heres hoping. Matt was 17 when he arrived so wont be covered either way.

Hi

Goodness, your post is very interesting but difficult to answer, anyway I will try

I do not feel that adults who come to the USA ilegally should be able to become a USC, as they broke the law by coming to the USA this way and knew this at entry.

Maybe as you say, if they paid back taxes, were of good moral character after say 10 years could become a LPR. But this could well encourage more people to just jump ship and come here, so do not think this will happen

A LPR can have their status revoked if they commit a crime of Moral perpitude. However, I do feel that any child brought to the US by illegal parents should be allowed to stay and adjust status to LPR , then after a further 5 years adjust to USC. They had no choice in where they had to live so should not have to suffer

The dream act (if passed) will only help some of these children. It does not go far enough. Not all can afford to attend college or are bright enough to get in.

I would like to see the Dream act include all children of E visa holders as well, whether they live in the US 1 day, 1 month, 1 year or 20 years. So long as they submit an adjustment of status before their 21st birthday and protected under the CSPA (Child status protection act)

If the guest worker program was introduced and date set for registration I feel that after that date then any employer who is found currently employing undocumented aliens should pay a heafty fine. The repsonsiblility should be the employers to check the legal status of someone before taking them on to work

Boarder control is very important and should be addressed for the security aspect and to deter another 12 million from crossing the boarder. How they can achieve this I have no idea
