Last Friday, Tom, our son, played in a soccer game for his school and badly hurt his knee. The game was supposed to have been cancelled, as there was a school dance, but a couple of days before the boys were told they had to play or the school would be fined. So they trooped off to Tampa, wanting the game to finish quickly so they could all change into their party clothes and go to the dance.
Unfortunately, Tom spent the evening at Bartow Regional, being x-rayed and prodded about. We managed to get him to the dance as everyone was coming out, so he could play the hero to the hilt, but we hoped the injury wasn't too bad as the x-ray didn't show an obvious fracture.
On Monday, we saw an Orthapedic Surgeon in Winter Haven, and he was concerned as Tom had, and still has, no feeling below his knee and can't move his foot or toes. So on Tuesday, off we went to Heart of Florida on H27 for an MRA - this checks the flow of the arteries. Luckily that showed the flow was clear, so Wednesday he had an MRI. Now he has to go next week for two more tests to do with nerves and I suppose after that they will decide if he needs surgery. The term ' Reconstructive Knee Surgery' has been mentioned more than once. The doctor thinks his knee dislocated when it was hit and then went back into place, but messed up the ligaments as that happened.
So poor Tom, age 13, has to hobble around on crutches, not go ice skating with his friends today and is probably looking at a minimum of 6 months of no more sport. When he went in for the tackle to try and get the ball last week, I'm sure he never thought all this could happen.
Having just gone through surgery myself, I would like nothing better than to be able to take all this away for him, or at least have it happen to me instead. I love him to bits.
